Quick Tips Thursday:Some interesting facts about eggs

A bird’s egg is one of the most common recipe ingredients and it is considered a very high nutrient food. Although eggs have many health benefits, consuming too many eggs could lead to health issues such as type 2 diabetes and cardio vascular risk due to the high cholesterol content. As the saying goes “too much of anything is good for nothing”.
Per capita consumption of eggs in 2014 was more than 250 in the United States, which means that eggs are a very heavily consumed food. So in today’s blog I will go over some interesting tips and facts about eggs.

Egg Freshness Test
Have you ever been unsure about the freshness of an egg?  I have been, but now know that there is a way to find it out if your eggs are fresh. It is a very simple test which can be done in less than 10 seconds, and all you will need is a jar of water.
Drop the egg inside the jar filled with water, if it goes down the jar then it means it is fresh and if it floats on the surface then it probably its old but it doesn’t mean it is spoiled (a spoiled egg will give a bad odor). Are you curious on the reason behind it? There is a science behind it, egg shells are porous so with time air gets filled inside the egg which is why it starts to float.

White vs. Brown Eggs
The myth about white and brown eggs! There is misconception that brown eggs are better than white or vice versa, some people even say brown eggs are organic and some say one has higher protein than the other, the list goes on. But the truth is very simple; there is no other difference except that white eggs are laid by hens with white feathers and brown eggs are laid by brown hens! The price difference is due to the human belief on one over the other.

Theory behind egg yolk
Do you feel happy when your egg yolk is deep yellow believing that its healthy, well you can continue to be happy but unfortunately there is no health reason behind that. The color of the egg yolk variation is an indication of the type of the chicken feed, sometimes it might be related to the health of chicken but definitely not to the healthiness of the egg.

One more way to find the freshness of eggs
The white of the fresh eggs are cloudy whereas for older eggs it is will be clear. Another way to find is fresh eggs are difficult to peel in comparison with the older eggs.
General suggestions; use fresh eggs for poaching and frying and use older eggs for scrambled eggs and omelets because the older it is the more it spreads.

Why don’t they hatch?
Have you ever wondered why your eggs don’t hatch? The reason is very simple: a hen must mate with a rooster in order to fertilize an egg. The eggs which we get in the stores are laid by hens which haven’t mated- makes sense right?

Who came first, egg or chicken?
I am sure many would have had this question in their mind or confronted this question at some place or the other. I recently found that egg came first. Two birds that weren’t a chicken created a chicken egg (evolution). Still many people have different opinion but to me this seemed to be a convincing theory.
